The makila txikiena (dance of the short sticks) is the third in the series of dances that make up the brokel-dantza, after the walk-out and the dance of greeting. It marks the beginning of the set of dances performed with implements. Here a single structure is proposed for the dances involving implements (makila txikiena, makila handiena, brokel makilena, uztai txikiena and zinta-dantza): an individual performance by the group leader, a zortziko by the group and the set completed with the banging together of the implements. In the zortziko danced prior to the makila txikiena (dance of the small sticks) the single step can be rounded out with a jump. This may well be the "Zortziko of 40 jumps" that Iztueta mentions prior to the makila handiena (dance of the long sticks).
