I started playing the fife in 2006. Since then, I've made it a point to be heard at every civil war re-enactment in Washington State I've been to. The song "The Girl I Left Behind Me" is a lyrical adaption of the song "Brighton Camp", which got started being popular during the Napoleonic wars. During the American Civil War, "Girl" was most often played when marching between camps or when leaving a city.

  • welll done!, i say u look like a re-enactor, what regiment u with?

  • I'm in the Army of Columbia Fife and Drum Corps, Washington Civil War Association.

  • Probably lol i lose track after all this time, I just play it, half the time. I'm in the Army of Columbia Fife and Drum Corps, Washington Civil War Association.

  • How different is the fife from the flute? I played a couple notes on one that my friend had and it wasn't too hard, but I didn't play a real song.

    Also, how much are fifes, on average? A good one, I mean.

  • A fife has no keys to press. It's just 6 holes. It has three main octaves like a flute, the notes are chromatic and easy to play until you hit the third octave, then there's some interesting fingerings :p

    A good fife...depends. The plastic fife is about $7 and it will kick any other fife's rear until you get to professional fifes. Model F fifes are the best, they are $100. People go for Cloos and stuff which runs for about $300. I suggest plastic 4 beginning, Model F for advanced. ($7 vs. $100)

  • Good job. You have a nice strong sound and good tone quality, but be sure to play C natural in this tune. Here's the fingering for it:

    O = open hole

    X = closed hole

    OXO XXX

    It's in the ascending run of 16th notes in the first part, and it sounds a little off-key when you play a C sharp instead.

    Keep up the good work!

  • this is my favorite song
