This is the video of Stormy and Beka at the 2010 Extreme Cowboy Race held at the Columbus, Ohio Equine Affaire. People from all over the country apply for this event but only 25-36 contestants are chosen to participate.
Stormy is currently 14 years old and has been completely blind from Equine Recurrent Uveitis for the last 5 years. (ERU is a disease quite common in Appaloosas.) Stormy is the first completely blind horse that has ever been chosen to particpate in Craig Cameron's Extreme Cowboy Race.
Beka and Stormy have been together since she received the 3 year old Appaloosa for her 8th birthday. You can see more about Stormy and Beka on Stormy's Facebook page "Stormy the blind horse." (please excuse the exuberant responses throughout the video - we were pretty proud of these competitors)

  • that's incredible! what a bond these two have. that horse and rider have complete trust in each other. what a tear jerker

  • So this is amazing because my appaloosa/thoroughbred cross (Bandit) is also blind. I got him that way and they had he had some degenerate eye disease so I wonder if it was the same thing.

Bandit is very responsive to riding and like any thoroughbred or thoroughbred cross he loves running and once I get him going its hard to get him to stop. His blindness does not slow him down.

Him and I do barrel racing and pole cutting :]

  • People people people, breaking at the poll and having the nose vertical, the only way to get the vertical and breaking of at the poll is for those hindlegs to come under and raise their shoulders that's what causes the poll to be the highest point and the nose still leading the way. by just pulling on the reins to break at the poll isn't correct. You must ride back to front. Stregnthen their core, back and hindlegs and then and only then will you have a correct horse.

  • Awww.... :)

  • Just read about this. My daughter is in the process of breaking her gelding...an app sport horse with one eye.

This has given her so much to look up too.
