Driving through The White Sands National Monument in New Mexico. Basically, at the northern end of the Chihuahuan Desert, in the centre of the Tularosa Basin, lies the world's largest gypsum dune field. The gypsum that forms these dunes comes from the light-coloured layers of rock you see in the San Andres Mountains. Rain and snow in these mountains dissolve the gypsum and carry it into the Tularosa Basin.
