Entry from: San Isidro, Costa Rica
Entry Title: "Chirripo - costa rica's highest point"

Entry:

"We started to walk at 5am. It was very cold, something not usual in this part of the country.
When we reached the 1st Km we were all sweat and all that cold had gone away...

The first seven kilometers are not very diffcult. On the seventh kilometer there is a place to rest and fill the bottles of water because by that time we had consumed about 2lts of water and we will need more for the following half of the trip...

The following kilometers start getting very hard. The weight of our backpacks starts to feel very much in our backs, and we start to think about all that extra things we brought and now we wanna throw away....
Finally after 3 Kms going up, there is a view that we stop to admire or is it just an excuse to get our breath back?.... a little of both i guess...

Finally we reached the last kilometer.... but its the **********e.... no wonder its called The Repentants.... but after 13 Kms of walking.... i dont think anyone is thinking in going back. Its better to just go through it....

Fianlly we reached the shelter after 7 hours of walking....
i stand at the edge of the cliff to take my breath back and to enjoy the view of the mountain and the cold breeze.... feels great....

From the shelter we can see Los Crestones, in the top of the mountain. Its 1.5 Kms away from the shelter ... ill go there later... it got late today and sun is setting now....

The next day we got up pretty early to find it was raining really hard and it was very cold... but we had to go out anyways...

After 2 hours of walking we got to the Chirripo peak, 7 Kms away from the shelter.... pretty easy hike except that to get to the top we have to actually climb like 200 mts.

We returned to the shelter. The day became really sunny, and the temperature went up considerably

That day i went around the park, up to Los Crestones and socialize with people inside the shelter. Its fun that there are people from all over the world, but somehow everyone understands each other regardless of the language they speak. Probably because we all share the same goal at that moment.

Inside the shelter, there is no hot water... the water comes straight from the nascent. Its the coldest water ive ever felt on me. So in order to take a bath I had to do some thinking first...There is only one phone. The phone line comes all th e way from the town, 15 Kms away,
from a line that is buried beneath the way. The electric energy comes from a solar panel which is connected to a car battery. The lights are on from 6pm to 8pm. After that there is complete darkness the rest of the night. I heard some coyotes in the distance and also some hunters...
i dont know how they go hunting there in the middle of the n ight... but well... thats their way of living i guess

Next day we started our way back....

Its definetively faster going back, but its way harder... my knees really felt the difference.... after 3.5 hours, we are back where we started 2 days ago.. only that only 2 of us got there in that time... the others took a lot more.... the last teammate last 3 more hours getting down.

Its really quite an experience. i planning in doing it again, only that this time i wanna know more places within the park..."
