Raja Dalem

Along with I Made Karyana I went to the house of his friend I Nyoman Kolok. Kolok's home is very close to Ubud market. Nyoman's Kolok family were celebrating a private ceremony to please the home spirits. The ceremony was held in front of the altar placed at the eastern corner of the house. The players of gamelan orchestra were friends of Nyoman Kolok and members of his own family. The musicians were playing under the "bale dauh", or ceremonial pavilion, standing on the west side of the courtyard. On the video I Made Karyana dances Raja Dalem, a dance mask or "topeng". The mask he's wearing was carved by himself. From the beginning to the minute 01:50 we see Made seating on the pavilion preparing himself short before dancing. On the left side there is another dancer having a nap while listening to the hypnotic gamelan music. For the first two minutes almost nothing happens. Please, enjoy by listening the music and observing the behaviour of people. We were sorrounded by calm and peace. During the ceremony the women were serving Balinese coffee and traditional cakes wrapped on banana leaves. Among the musicians there is I Wayan Sudiarsa, aka Pacet. Wayan is a young musician and composer from Peliatan, a quarter (banjar) on the eastern side of Ubud. He has already presented some of his musical creations to the Bali Festival held on June every year in Denpasar. Wayan is playing a drum. We can see him often and very clearly. It's interesting to observe master I Made Karyana while he's dancing. The gracefulness of his movements and the magnificent expression he's giving to both hands and fingers.
