  • OK, so how do I (2) Arch my fingers and (9) Mute unwanted strings??

  • @ziggerzag101 Arching your fingers is a conscious effort. You should pay attention to your fingers, and whenever they aren't arched, just arch them back, even using your other hand if necessary. Eventually it'll become natural. And about muting unwanted strings, there are two ways: One, touch the bass strings you're not playing with the side of your right hand palm, and two, touch the treble strings you're not playing with the parts of your fingers which don't press the strings. Hope this helps.

  • Hmmm, tell a strat player not to attack strings and you have taken half of their possible tones away, certain styles require different playing dynamics... I dont know how to say most of this information is limiting and bad practice without sounding like a troll but really, it is.

  • @MWRiff I agree with you, but we are talking about two different things here. You are talking dynamics, while I address complete beginners, who still don't apply dynamics. When a beginner attacks the strings (or is too afraid to strum) s/he's not thinking about dynamics, s/he's just practicing wrong approach. Dynamics come later, and not just on strat, but also on acoustic and classical, but a beginner usually plays too softly or too loud *all the time*, which is what I address in this lesson.

  • Are there guitarists that don't use the top strings? For me to hit the frets with the tip of my fingers, I can't play the top strings unless I do chords in a down-right angle.

  • @brucenatelee It's a matter of practice. A guitar player needs to know how to hit any string cleanly and in the right dynamic he or she wants it to sound.

  • this is an awesome beginners' guide, thanks much!

  • Pretty cool man.

You should upload a record of yourself playing that song at 7:20, its feels really cool.

What's the song's name, by the way?

    Thank you.

  • That is one of the ugliest guitars I have ever seen. It looks like a weapon.

  • a beginner guitarist cannot bend

  • Your name is "Such A Fluffy"???

  • Thanks for the video! One thing I might add is using your thumb to mute bass strings as well; I kind of habitually wrap my thumb around for the E string on a C chord, for example, and over the A string as well on a D chord, that's something a lot of beginners can find pretty easy to get into the habit of. It kind of goes against point 2, but you can also use a fretting finger to mute a LOWER string, I sometimes use my ring finger to mute the E string in a C chord depending on what transitions

  • This is a great lesson. Thanks so much.

  • you're funny. What's the secret to being happy like you?

  • Just last night I watched as my finger bent inward and said, "okay that cant be good for my joint." This video was very helpful.

Hope it works though, my fingers are short. :(

  • @LickNRiff Alright, thanks. I've been blasting my strings because that's how I thought they got thier sound but I guess not. I just couldn't get the "sound" for some reason. I get it now. Thanks bro!
