Municipal Theatre (?) - Volos, Greece .

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi ( 1678 - 1741)

Recitativo ( Megacle/Aristea), Recitativo
( Megacle/Argene) and Aria of Megacle " Lo seguitai felice " (Atto terzo, Scena terza ) from the Opera "L´Olimpiade" , "dramma per musica " in three acts on an Italian libretto by Pietro Metastasio, originally written for Antonio Caldara´s opera ( 1733) with the same title .
The Vivaldi´s version was premiered on 17. February 1734 at the Teatro Sant´Angelo in Venice. We could just guess about the first cast, but I´m almost sure, that the role of Aristea was sung by the beloved Vivaldi´s Primadonna Anna Giró ( Giraud) , who was also his first Griselda (18.May 1735 ) and for whom Vivaldi wrote more than fifteen major roles during her career from "Farnace" (1726) to "Catone in Utica" (1740) .
"Putting on an opera without La Giró is not possible" - told the Maestro himself to the Marchese Bentivoglio.
**************************************** *
Please, pay attention, that the Vivaldi- version and the Caldara- version of this libretto are quite different, so I ( as far as I have only the Caldara - version) "picked up" all the recitativs word by word from "Caldara- Metastasio", because Maestro Vivaldi changed a lot there. :-)

Atto terzo, Scena terza (III /3)

MEGACLE
Più resister non posso. Al caro amico
per pietà chi mi guida?

ARISTEA
Incauto! E quale
sarebbe il tuo disegno? .
Perdi te stesso
presentandoti al re; non salvi altrui.

MEGACLE
Col mio principe insieme
almen mi perderò.
(vuol partire)

ARISTEA
Senti. E non stimi
consiglio assai miglior, che il padre offeso
vada a placare io stessa?

MEGACLE
Oh grande, oh generosa,
oh pietosa Aristea!

ARISTEA
Ah basta;
non fa d'uopo di tanto.
Un sol de' guardi tuoi
mi costringe a voler ciò che tu vuoi.

MEGACLE
Deh secondate, o numi,
la pietà d'Aristea.
Argene, io voglio
seguitarla da lungi.

ARGENE
Ah tanta cura
non prender di costui. Vedi che 'l cielo
è stanco di soffrirlo. Al suo destino
lascialo in abbandono.

MEGACLE
Lasciar l'amico! Ah così vil non sono.

MEGACLE
Lo seguitai felice
quand'era il ciel sereno,
alle tempeste in seno
voglio seguirlo ancor.
Come dell'oro il fuoco
scopre le masse impure,
scoprono le sventure
de' falsi amici il cor.
(parte....)

  • Oh, and I love this BTW!!! I really wish he did more Opera roles. Perhaps Sesto from Cesare??

  • @CubbyNH

Sesto is coming soon - in February already, but only in a concert version ! With the dream - team Christie/Scholl/Bartoli/Stutzman/Dumaux !!!

I HOPE ( and pray) , that this performance will be filmed and broadcasted !!!

  • I heard he wasnt going to be able to do it because of his schedule or something like that. Has that changed? I hope so. Yes I agree a def dream cast though.. Love em all!!!

  • Yess, there should be only two performances with Philippe, but it´s true, he ´ll sing Sesto!!!!

  • Great!!! I'm sure it will be video'd or at least a radio broadcast.. I wish I could see it, the cast really is asll star!!!

  • :-) I would love to be there, but it was quite impossible to get a ticket! Difficult even also for the performers themselves! :-)

  • Yup. I hear sperai vicino in lido....:)

  • Of course, they did it , even not only with their own music, but also " reused" some themes of the dear colleagues - like the famous "Sposa..." :-)

  • Lot's of baroque composers do this. If they find a particular melody that an audience likes often times it will re-appear in a later work. Handel did it all the time.. I think they employed the sayhing "if it aint broke dont fix it" when doing this. (-:

  • At the beginning of 1730-x, travelling across Europe, Vivaldi read in his carriage the new libretto for the opera "Demofoonte" written by Metastasio for Vienna. Maestro was so pleased with it and wrote an aria on the text "Sperai vicino il lido" and put it then in his own new partiture of "L´Olimpiade"....later he changed his plans and used the music for this aria of Megacle.
