They are African marimbas (originally from Zimbabwe). The grip is sort of a cross between the French grip for timpani and a Traditional grip. The stickings are not alternated on purpose to bring out certain notes in the line.

Someone please teach these kids how to alternate sticking.. BUT the group does sound good!
