In that situation, it isn't stealing. The members just want to know how the song flows & the words in order to sing it. I do feel that the artists, musicians, & production team are losing money in the process. At my church, usually someone has the CD that the song is on. So, they bring it to choir practice & put it in the CD player. The choir begins to learn & sing it from there. If you need outside help in learning it, you write down the words, look up the words, or find the song for yourself.
I appreciate you sharing this topic. Imagine if 1 popular song is emailed to every praise team member and band member across the country, just to learn for Sunday. How many $0.99 sales are lost???
Possible solution: With today's forms of media distribution (ie -iTunes, Amazon, Rhapsody etc.), it's pretty easy to purchase 1 or 2 songs that your choir/ praise team may minister, without purchasing an entire CD. I think as ministry workers/ leaders, we should lead by example, sow seeds and support.
We actually have a day set aside for choir rehearsal. Any song that we have is listened to on that day and practiced on that day. So what you leave with is a cd of yourself practicing and singing the song. Because ministry is business, Gods business at that. We do the best we can to professionally conduct the content we use and share.
my question to the praise leader or music minister would be what does the artist whose songs you are downloading, burning to CD's, MP3's think of what you are doing. Bootleg is copy right infrigment which is a violation of law, I believe it is a federal offense, and your intent or ignorance of the law doesn't release you from the liability of the law.
Well I know that artist want their songs sung in churches wanting it to touch others. I see it kind of pormoting their music where others in the church might like it and want to buy the cd because that was their jam.
If the artists, producers, etc. are in the business for the money only, then they have the wrong motive, like the mone changers in the temple. Also when worship music is introduced to the congregation people go and buy the CD or download the single from itunes,so the exposure is a good thing for everybody concerned.
Would you say there is a difference between copying One or Two song versus copying the WHOLE CD? I sometimes use limewire, but I NEVER copy the Whole CD, only the song I want and If I want the whole CD I'll buy it. I'd rather not wasting money on a cd that only has One song that I like.
