Democrats Will Invest In Our Nation's Future

Democratic Senators Jack Reed and Michael Bennet held a press conference this afternoon to discuss Democrats efforts to strengthen our economy now and invest in our nation over the long term by passing last years overdue appropriations bills. Among other benefits, the bills will ensure that children have access to quality K-12 education, students can pay for college after, and all Americans can afford quality health care. Three leaders whose organizations success rely on a working government Gregory Cendana, Vice President of the United States Student Association; Alan Morgan, Chief Executive Officer of the National Rural Health Association; and Deborah Weinstein, Executive Director of the Coalition on Human Needs joined the Senators.

A year ago, we started work on the appropriations bills contained in this measure, Reed said. Unfortunately, the effort to work with the former Administration was met with resistance and partisanship that was all too common. Today, with the support of Senator Cochran and others on the Republican side, we are on the verge of finally passing a bipartisan and responsible bill that addresses the priorities of the middle-class, including: improving education for our children; strengthening health care; and increasing energy efficiency and independence. For the last eight years, domestic programs have been starved while Republicans rubber-stamped George Bushs unwise tax cuts and kept the cost of the Iraq War off the budget. This legislation offers a course correction. It complements the economic recovery package we passed last month, and provides critical investments to strengthen our economy and our future.
