I was canoeing in Missouri and I saw we were paddling past a guy's house with a confederate flag. I sang this as loud as I could.

I've thought for some time now that this song should be our national anthem. The lyrics are still very relevant to our current problems, and musically, it is much easier to perform. Most people cannot sing the Star Spangled Banner.

@Ferrariman601 Be something else for other nations to hear huh?

Just the thing for suppressing the Rebellion!

@DanM25456 then he comes and and sings dixie and you get in a huge intense singing contest and you start trying to sing over each other, and finally, a huge explosion from the epicness kills you both.

Actually it was a song about the Revolution, hence the lyrics "Rally once Again". I wish I could find the original lyrics.

@weistaz Haha, no. If I recall, Battle Hymn had a similar story to what you're describing, but Battle Cry is a pure Yankee invention.

just to clear something up this song started out as a confederate song adapted buy the union then past on the USMC

you got to love these recordings from the early 1900s. they may have crappy quality but have a certain charm to them.

@Ferrariman601 do you know how much they would rip out the spirit of the song? First they will remove any form of violence, practically censoring the entire song, and replacing it with their "politically correct" variant. The star spangled banner is a great song, but too many people place their own spin on it ruining its emotion.

hmmm
I think hanging is a bit harsh and illiberal, don't you agree?

I don't know. Depends on what you did. I like the symbolism of the condemned man climbing the gallows. It was standard operating procedure for a long time. I don't think you can apply 21st century standards to 19th century circumstances. The country was tearing itself apart & a lot of things happened that modern Americans find a bit harsh & illiberal.

why did you show a black union soldier hanging as the chores part came up "down with the traitor?"
Morena21871 2 years ago
Short answer: Traitors should be hung. Its a period photo of a formally executed person.
Long answer: How can you tell what race the guy is? I cant. Its an old, grainy b&w photo of someone wearing dark colored frock coat, and with a blindfold covering his face. The very next slide is of a black Medal of Honor winner - so thanks for trying to make race an issue... Jeez!

Morena was actually right, it really is a black Union soldier - the photo is called "Execution of William Johnson at Jordan's Farm." He was hanged for desertion. I'm not trying to start anything, I know you were just looking for a period photograph.

You are correct in that I was looking for a period photo. Not too many like that. Race has nothing to do with it. If he was a deserter, he should have been shot. Hanging was for spies. I just weary of people puking of racism every time I turn around. Especially after I put in positive imagery of the USCT and Emancipation. Thanks for clarifying the origin of the photo.
