IXV : ESA'S WAY TO COME BACK FROM SPACE

The European Space Agency (ESA) is currently working on a space mission with important implications for the future of space transportation in Europe.
After being launched into space, the IXV - or Intermediate eXperimental Vehicle - will return to earth as if from a low-Earth orbit mission, testing brand-new European atmospheric re-entry technologies during its hypersonic and supersonic flight phases. For ESA, the mission is essential to further develop critical technologies for future robotic or manned spacecraft.
In the name Intermediate eXperimental Vehicle, the word intermediate means that the vehicle builds on earlier achievements and performs the step that forms the bridge to future developments.
The two-hour IXV mission is scheduled for launch in 2012 on board Vega, Europe's new, small launcher.

I used to own a Vega(Mine ran great!) but I didnt think of the car when I read this article... i thought of the star.

@peejay1954 Vega is name of a star which is in my mind more significant then some shitty american car. but on the other hand,, who cares ??! this is not hollywood its science and not names mater but results of exploration.

Just like we Europeans snigger and nudge one another when we reminisce about the Apollo missions...being that Apollo was a fictional Greek god, and we all know how rediculous ficticious deities are. Instead of The Vega we should have named it The Bilbo Baggins...

@realsupercopter But many Americans over the age of 45 have heard of the Chevy Vega, a good 100 million of us. We'll just snicker and nudge each other when this information becomes more mainstream.

They are calling their lifting vehicle, the "Vega" ? Did they ever hear of the car Chevrolet built in the 70's called the Vega? This was one of the biggest pieces of Junk ever to leave a car factory! I believe it was built out of compressed rust! Does the ESA really want to be associated with that name?

@peejay1954: Vega will be an Italian rocket for ESA. Almost nobody in Europe has ever heard about this Chevrolet car... So I guess that's not an issue !
