Attached my gopro camera a few feet above a crab trap over the weekend. Sped it up in the editor and condensed 3h40m down to 4 minutes.

Interesting to watch because it exposes my newbie error. The bait bag was too close to the side and top, allowing the crabs to dine without having to go inside the trap. As a result, there were no keepers in this trap. Luckily, there were in others!

It's also interesting to see the flatfish hovering around the edges, hoping for some scraps! The "shaking" is actually the swaying of the line in the current. The current changes direction about 3/4 of the way through.

The area, like most in the Puget Sound, is being pillaged by commerical crabbers. So, what over the summer would have been close to full traps (after 4 hours) yielded maybe a quarter of the crabs. Makes it really, really hard to limit. But, I guess people need jobs. Or whatever.

  • yeah, I'd like a bigger trap. but I'm dropping them from a kayak. what I like about these mesh ones is that they collapse to almost nothing.

  • hey have you ever been to stump pass or boca grande?

  • That's cool. I have a go pro as well and was recording when I hooked a monster red going flats fishing with my father. It was my first red fish ever caught, so it was cool to have it on tap. We even did an under water release of the fish when we released it.

  • I wish I lived near an ocean

  • Awesome Video! I think you'll find more success if you invested in a Commercial Type Crab Trap - they usually come up pretty often on craigslist or whatnot.

  • lol There is a flounder trying to get in.

  • Sweet video! Some of those looked pretty big!

  • Nice video. This is something I have always wanted to see. Thx!

  • those soles are out there wanting a piece of the action, lol
