This hymn does not need much introduction, but I will say that it was written by a man named John Newton.
John was at one point in his life the captain of a slave ship and was full of evil, until he heard the preaching of the Gospel.
Then, the Lord graciously reached down and saved him and his life was changed completely and if you are wondering exactly what the word "wretch" means, well, it is another word for a person who is filled with wickedness. That is, he/she is a sinner and according to Romans 3:23, that is the case for all of us and if you are wondering what you are actually saved from, you are ultimately saved from a coming day when the Lord Jesus Himself will return to Earth to righteously judge and pour out His wrath on those who refuse to believe this.
Also, "Grace" is another word for unmerited favor and if you want to receive this grace and be saved from this coming day, I strongly, but lovingly urge you this moment simply to turn to Jesus, call out to Him, confess your sins, believe with your whole heart that He is the only Son of God and that He died on the cross to forgive your sins and rose again from the dead to justify you. That is, to make you right with God, ask Him to forgive you for your sins and accept Him as your personal Savior and Lord, and please do this today, because tomorrow may very well be eternally to late.
Plus, if you are thinking that I actually recorded this in such a place as a cathedral or large room, think again! I recorded it right here in my apartment and added reverb to it.
(Lyrics)
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound,
that saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
and grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear
the hour I first believed!
Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
'Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
and grace will lead me home.
The Lord hath promised good to me,
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
as long as life endures.
Yea, when this heart and flesh shall fail,
and mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the vale,
a life of joy and peace.
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
the sun forbear to shine,
but God, who called me here below
will be forever mine.
When we've been there ten thousand years,
bright shining as the sun,
we've no less days to sing God's praise
than when we first begun.
Thank you so much!
