I can't believe you think they never thought about this.The building is unharmed because it was designed to take lightening strikes.

lightning strikes tall buildings all the time. They're designed so it won't affect them and it helps to protect other buildings. Anyways it's still kinda cool.

Of course its a consideration when building. Every Tall tower has a lightning system.
