Also if you've got alot of roses to make, like for a wedding cake, it's a good idea to have 2 bags prepared and filled because the temperature of your hand will warm the icing causing a thinner consistency. You can switch off when one gets too warm. Hope this helps.

I've been a cake decorator for nearly 30 years now. I've watched alot of these tutorials on making roses out of buttercream just to see how others do theirs. Some are beautiful roses and everyone does their best, but I've yet to hear anyone speak of the importance of the consistency of the buttercream. You've got to have a stiff consistency. As stiff as you can pipe without having problems with being able to squeeze the bag.

@101rimu It's called a 'pastry nail'
You can get one at just about any crafts store [ like Jo-ann or Michael's] and they come with most tip sets.

how do you get those silver hold up things for the flowers
-
wow in white they really rock!!And the most realistic ive seen :D i want the recipe of the frosting pls!!

you can buy flower nails online or even hobby shops usually have them and they are inexpensive. CuPcAKEaTeR123
Cometo36- you can not use oil instead of shortening because the oil will thin the icing down and it wont be stiff enough to make the flowers.
3000Crystal- Piping bags are not where you get your color for your icing, they are for just piping. You use a gel coloring made just for this. You can not use regular food coloring because even that will thin the mixture down to thin.
