A sample run of a 1080p MKV video streaming off of my local PC to my iPad2 running XBMC.

It was only plugged in for power, the dock connector served no other purpose.

First attempt at filming while fiddling... excuse the pointing inaccuracies.

Too bad Apple doesn't allow this functionality out of the box... they would rather you stick to their Apple ecosystem (and thus increase profits for AAPL) then allow for the best and most open user experience.

Hey Apple, if you're reading this, it's time to allow FLAC support in iTunes! Maybe then I'll buy an AppleTV

  • I'm not sure I understand. Most other youtube videos I've looked at point to the ipad2 having a hard time with 1080p hi-profile, hi-bitrate mkv. But in this video it seems to play no sweat. I AM impressed, but also in slight disbelief! U mention the CPU usage on your PC as being very low, and that no transcoding is happening.. Im just amazed really, 1080p mkv no sweat on an ipad, seems too good to be true!

    Hav u tried AirVideo b4?

btw: what is your home network setup, wireless G or N router?

  • @SkillipEvolver - Well remember, this is running on XBMC. Since this is a jailbroken iPad, XBMC developers used a low level video decoder API (I can't recall the name) that Apple approved apps don't have access to. This low level API allows for the iPad2's true video decoding potential to be unlocked. It can thus handle 1080p video.

For reference, this is a H.264 MKV encoded with profile 4.1.

I haven't tried AirVideo... I have tried StreamtoMe. I like XBMC better.

I am running an N network.

  • @illusion8055 - Mind you, it stutters on a very high bit rate file like Killa.Sample.x264.mkv

  • It an app that you can only download from Cydia after adding the XBMC repositories... ie you need to jailbreak your iPad

  • @asim14545 no you have to install it with cydia.

  • Buy a samsung 10.1 android tablet and theres no hassle playing any video formats..seriously!

  • @illusion8055 Ok, that's okay though, as most things never get up to the 40mbps of killa.

  • @illusion8055 Thanks for the info. High 4.1 is pretty much the highest it can go, but I have seen the occassional 5.1 MKV files too. Do you know if it can handle that?

  • is this a app on app store called xbmc

  • Awesome man :)
