Indonesia is home to about 90 per cent of the world's wild orangutan population, and was once covered by lush rain forests.

But the endangered animals are quickly losing their natural habitat since more forests are being converted into palm oil plantations.

The country has become the world's largest producer of palm oil in just a few years.

In the island of Borneo at least four palm oil company employees are suspected of killing the endangered animals.

Orangutan experts say the increasing conflict between the animals and companies operating in the forest can only be solved if the government is more serious about conservation.

Around 75 per cent of the remaining orangutan population is currently being trapped in plantations.

Al Jazeera's Step Vaessen reports from East Kalimantan.

  • Boycott Palm oil! Orangutans are desperately endangered because of the encroachment of palm tree oil. Anybody who has tried to do something about it has been very badly intimidated. These corps don’t care; they aren’t concerned with human or animal rights. Just to make palm tree oil they knock down the primary forests where orangutans live, and it doesn’t matter what anybody does about it because the complicity goes up to the government. If this goes on then orangutans are in desperate trouble!

  • Indonesia is alluring foreign capitals (for example on the BBC) to invest in the country, saying that it is a progressive and broadminded country, though in fact it actually is a most backward and corrupt country. What an ugly, shameless people they are!

  • F the oil. Save the orangutans!!

It makes me happy that my country has the only 90% of wild orangutans

    :3

  • This is so sad...

  • my country my rule , fuck west

  • Good ol' capitalist "development" rides again! Let NOTHING be sacred. NOTHING. Except money.

  • @MarissaShirin The reporter should focus on the issue and find more reliable sources. So people could trust your reports for the next time. Be aware and keep your standard. I'm very disappointed.

  • @MarissaShirin AND now pointing to one party according to the "REPORTER'S VIEW". and If you go trough the news report, you'll see how immature this report been made.

How come the oil palm companies are appointed for killing the orang utans and at the mean time the villagers keep complaining how violence the orang utans are to the villagers? What are the contributions to the this problem? I cant see any relation between this two.

  • I prefer ADUAN RAKYAT TV3 and EDISI SIASAT NTV7. They are eager to meet the BIG BOSSes straight away to the offices to ask WHO's RESPONSIBLE for the event. It's really jaw dropping when I watched this.

IS THIS AN AL- JAZEERA ENGLISH' S NEWS REPORT?

The reporter JUMP INTO CONCLUSION without any proper investigation with any parties involved directly to the event (NO INTERVIEW with LOCAL AUTHORITIES).

  • @BNPpatriot Humans are apes, so I guess you want yourself eradicated as well.

  • Murder? fk'ever...
