  • Hi. I want to achieve the sort of flawless, glossy surface, that you can get with 2 part epoxy resin. I'm wondering which would be better- the Golden Tar Gel or the Golden Self-Leveling Clear Gel Medium? They seem similar from what I've read about them and I can't decide which to get. Thanks.

  • @ar4216 This is a complex topic and we strongly encourage you to call or email our Tech Support for more info. Essentially there is no perfect substitute for creating an epoxy look using acrylic mediums. For some pros and cons, see our Tech Sheet on Creating Clear Layers in the Application Section you can find here: goldenpaints(dot)com/technicaldata/techsheets(dot)php As for the two products you mentioned, Tar Gel is more leveling and thicker, but both need to be kept thin.

  • This stuff is awesome.

  • @caliclips We certainly like to think so and happy you agree!

  • I have tried every kind of acrylic paint out there. Hands down, nobody has the tech innovation going on like Golden does. I'm slowly using up the not so great stuff hoping that one day soon I will be 100% Golden!

I really hafta paint faster and bigger I think... Ha!

Anywayz, I haven't tried this tar stuff yet, but it sure looks like fun. BTW was that fluid acrylic you added into the tar?

    Cool demo! Thanx!

  • Thanks for the complements!! Hopefully you will have a chance to try this and all our other things as you continue to explore. And yes, that was a Fluid Acrylic that was added.

  • i bought some of this and it doesn't flow as freely as displayed in this video. Can it be thinned with water ?

  • @troysamidget -

You probably won’t be very happy with using a clay mold, but that’s fine, because you can certainly make your own silicone molds.

Take a look at a company called “Smooth On”

This company will also have release agent sprays if the acrylics don’t pop out as readily if you like.

  • Hello,

I've been wanting to make my own molds to pour the clear tar gel into, but am not sure how to go about doing it. I've heard that the best molds to use, are the silicone baking molds, as the tar gel (once cured) pops right out, but obviously if I want to make my own molds, silicone isn't an option. Can I use clay, and if so, will the tar gel easily release from it once cured? Thanks in advance for any info.

  • Hi Jeremy. The key is learning why the bubbles are developing in the first place. In the Clear Tar Gel video we show bubbles from mixing and not allowing the mixture to sit long enough to let the bubbles escape. However, if you are getting bubbles during the application of the Self-Leveling Clear Gel, then we would need to look at factors like surface absorbency, brush used, brushing/application technique and drying conditions. • @GoldenPaints Hello, I have been using slcgm for some time now, but the bubbles are driving me mad. I collage dried paint from a glass palette and use a gel medium to "glue" it on a surface. I like to have the thick, saturated, gloss and the superb clarity that this medium allows but I can't seem to escape the bubbles. I get pretty thick with the collage, so am I doomed to bubbles? I could send a pic to you if I can get an email address. Jeremy
