@duplessis2006 I was thinking the same thing, but then, looking at the video, it seems like the hardest part to overcome is the initial upside down stability caused by the huge beam of these boats. At that point the mast will still be pointing pretty much straight down and not counter the righting much.
@duplessis2006 They can lean a keel (VOR70 have degree 40°, weight of bulb is 7,4 tones and lenght of keel 4,5m) I think this is enough to overbalance mast with sails ;-)
very good test, but does the self righting work with the mast and sail on? thats a lot of water to move against. or at this point are there shear off points for the rigging?
If the boat were to ever roll over, all the people on board would be long gone and either seperated from the boat or drowned by the time it flips back over.....fucking lame

the keel is a canting keel it cants to one side to right the boat as seen here or to provide more leverage to keep the boat upright when sailing

I was wondering about the keel. Does it serve a purpose in the roll over and thats why it is bent in the end because it wasnt in the start..

Rolls great, the bent keel is a nice added touch.

next time have the crane pick it up to about 30ft drop it then fix what breakes, and you will be able to finish the race!
