The state of Illinois is frequently ranked as having one of the worst mental health care systems in the United States. The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill has given the state a grade of 'F' in recent years. But behind the defunding and disappointments are real people with real struggles. It's "those people" who are reclaiming their dignity by confronting systems of power and injustice.
I think the quality of mental health care/treatment for Illinoisans is largely dependent on where in Illinois a person lives. I live in Rock Island County and I have been in treatment for a chronic severe mental illness for 39 years. I have been in treatment in other states too, but none come close to the quality in Rock Island County. It is true though that the state hospitals in Illinois are full of abuse and rights violations, and there is a huge lack of available beds.
