I don't doubt that *some* games can affect people, but I believe that television is much more of a danger to the mind than this type of game. When in the 70's you had children like my mom witnessing the broadcast murder of a news reporter repeatedly...*sigh*

I've done a lot of psychological study, and have looked into a lot of other independent and funded research; you will see that in a side-by-side comparison, videogames are less harmful than many daytime TV shows!

Solution: monitor your kids.
