The crew from the 5 Gyres Voyage from Namibia to Uruguay to study plastic pollution in the South Atlantic Ocean stopped at St. Helena Island along their Atlantic crossing. The Island has a population of 5K, has few beaches and is where Napoleon died. Sandy Bay has one of the two sandy beaches on the Island. Sadly, the beach is covered in plastic pollution. The 5 Gyres crew who have been all over the world evaluating plastic pollution on beaches thought Sandy Bay Beach had the highest concentration nurdles they had ever seen. These are the same nurdles that we pulled up in almost every single trawl. Plastic is out of control in this world. Here is a video of the crazy taxi ride to Sandy Bay Beach.
It's like Corsica's roads... but on acid ! ;-))
