i can't believe that my grandpa, john huarte, won the heisman. It was one of my greatest memories holding the heisman and man is it heavy. He loves telling me about how much he enjoyed palying football for ND and MD when we go fishing. And yes we are basque and it is also pronounced "whooartay"
@foolycooly7 Cool. He signed with the Jets alongside Joe Namath so he never really got a chance. You should ask Mr. Huarte if he ever regretted signing with the same team as Broadway Joe. We will never know how good John would have been had he signed with a team that would let him be the starter.
With all the mixing of the races, I seriously doubt that there are any pure human races in the world. The only way to actually know who is what is by DNA testing. Therefore, the answer is moot.
Not exactly. The name Huarte is Basque, and of course the Basques live in northern Spain - but they're not "Spanish" or "Hispanic," especially if you ask them. The Basques pre-date the Spanish on the Iberian peninsula by hundreds of years. The pronunciation of the name above is the Basque name as pronounced in Spanish. In the Basque language, it's closer to "hu-ert."
When I was a kid, my Dad would take me to the Mater Dei football games. I remember John. He was great in high school . What bothers me is that no one ever mentioned that he is of Hispanic descent. True pronounciation of his surname is "Whooartay", not Hu-ert.
Believe it or not, John Huarte received the Heisman Trophy in New York City two weeks before he was issued his first letter sweater as a senior at Notre Dame.
