The spectacular Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano was the first cathedral of Rome, where Emperor Constantine allowed the Pope to set up the episcopal chair. The Basilica was built upon the foundations of the army barracks of Maxentius, the Western Roman Emperor, 306 - 312, who was defeated by Eastern Emperor Constantine at the battle of Milvian Bridge, on October 28, 312 C.E.
