Heroes II and Heroes III is much more fun , imo =)

I played old Kings Bounty was good game also.

The only improvement I would make is a system where if you lose zero units in a fight you get some sort of buff for the next fight/ morale/ bonus.

I think actually the first game of this type was the board game "King of the table top" It had a similiar appeal. Recruit monsters with abilities on a turn based system. etc. It is from before people owned PC's.
