Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question about bending technique...

"I looked through all of your videos and could not find one about bending. Id like to see you do a video all about bending technique."

Thanks,
Doug - San Diego, CA. U.S.A.

Bending guitar strings with excellent technique, style and accuracy involves work on three important areas:

1). Bend Types: There are two categories here; Standard Bends and Pre-Bends. Each category has sub-categories, such as, (but not limited to), sustain and release concepts.

2). Pitch Accuracy: Bending a note to a wrong note is still a wrong note. However, tweaking notes out of pitch for short durations, (as in; 1/4 or 3/4 increments), can yield very interesting effects.

3). Practice Exercises: In order to achieve great results with bending, players need to practice various bend styles as well as, pitch accuracy.

The instructional video contains solid explanations of all of the above points.

  • but how do you mute the other strings while bending?

  • It's all about training. It will hurt and it you will have to use alot of force to get some strings up.

  • This is an excellent video. I had dabbled blindly with bending, but the "bending to the wrong note" statement made everything so clear. Thank you

  • Im curentlly doing 3 tones bends but if the strings aren't new (2 weeks are enought) they break. IS it normal for them to break? EVEN 0.11?

  • @FEEDER87 mute them with parts of the palm of your picking finger. and the free fingers of your left.

  • @Thompsongast

    Hope this helps ;)

  • @julius9747

try starting with Ernie Ball 09's then when used to it change to 010 (sound better but are heavier)

Don't forget to set up your guitar (or get it set up by a professional) because changing string brand and especially thickness can cause intonation issues and with some guitars tuning issues.

  • @xLinkinPark1994x can u name some , brand name...

  • @julius9747 Maybe some lighter strings

  • How do you let go of the strings from the bend without your guitar making any noise? The strings always hit my fingers

  • that was a good thorough video!!

  • i have an epiphone lp 100 but i cant bend it to even a full step... y is that ? wat string should i use ?
