The First FLS Microjet Test Flights (BD-5J)

The FLS Microjet is a small but high performance jet-powered aircraft built from an amateur homebuilder kit. The design was originally developed in the 1970's by Jim Bede of Bede Aircraft, Inc. and designated as the BD-5. The FLS Microjet is an updated version of the BD-5J with today's technology and engineering.

This video highlights the first few test flights of the FLS Microjet that took place in January 2011. Working with BD-Micro Technologies, Inc, I was privileged to be the test pilot and first customer of the FLS Microjet.

I used to fly years ago. My friend Ed had 2 BD-5's with the 21' Span Naca wings on them, one had a Subaru engine, the other a honda. Your wing is bigger than the normal 13' for a jet version, am I correct?

@Matsci101 My wing span is 17'. A smaller version was tested but never truly used on any of the jets you've seen in the past. The prop versions are typically 21'.

@flsmicrojet There is a youtube video of Burt Rutan (Jan 2010) explaining his role at Bede (Newton, KS) in the 1970's. I think its "Burt Rutan 6 of 8 Bede Aircraft". He says he helped design the "Truck-A-Plane", not the actual plane. I personally flew the Truck-A-Plane (Corky Fornoff checking me out while driving the truck), then the BD-5B and the BD-5J, w/ Corky on the wing in a P-51 -- all at Newton, KS, 1976 I think. Sold my BD-5B in 1979 in El Paso.
