Kumbh Mela is one of the worlds largest gathering of human beings. Once in four years people from all over the world converge at a sacred place in India. They engage in the celebrations, debates, mass rituals, processions and a dip in the holy river. It is an opportunity to introspect, meet their spiritual gurus and also for some to seek salvation. This year the Kumbh Mela is held at Haridwar in north India. More than 50 million visitors are expected to attend. The documentary closely follows the inspirations of some of the participants who have travelled thousands of miles from around the world to be part of this spectacular event. Publisher Elena and husband Sergey travel from Kiev, the capital city of Ukraine to Haridwar to be at the service of their spiritual master. They are accompanied by a large team of other followers from Russia. Maa Karunamayi arrives from New Delhi to assume one of the top religious positions in a grand ceremony. She will be leaving behind her family life to enter sainthood. Many Holy men and great saints are here to propagate their messages and missions. The issues range from global warming to womens rights. Kumbh Mela is a melting pot of ideas, ideologies and philosophies from different cultures. It is the collective consciousness of humanity.
The documentary attempts to go behind the massive crowds and vibrant colours and reveal the meaning and the relevance of Kumbh Mela in the 21st century.
