The Enteprise
RAYNHAM — A messy mop of chestnut brown hair floated up over the couch pillows.
"Mama," a tiny but firm voice summoned. "I want popcorn."
"How about an apple?" Eileen Quinlan, 36, chirped to her 3-year-old daughter, Olivia, one evening in June.
"No. I want popcorn," she insisted.
This wasn't the usual parent-child disagreement over healthy snacking. Each gram of protein Olivia ingests every day can be a matter of life or death.
A rare metabolic disor der she has had since birth only allows her to consume as much protein as she needs to grow — no more, no less.
In her short life, Olivia has gone into "metabolic crisis" six times and been rushed to the emergency room of Children's Hospital in Boston. If untreated, or if treatment comes too late, she could have a seizure, go into a coma or die.
