The masked Devils of Sierra Leone are not synonymous with Lucifer, but rather evolved as secular spirits from ethnic pagan tradition. The stereotype word "Devil" was probably attached to these mystical dancers by outside forgien observers many years ago. Masked Devils are often dashing characters of notable energy, serving various functions such as: protector, bearer of good luck, ancestral keeper, participants in ceremony or dancers for amusement. Most Devils are taken seriously and possess supernatural power. Other Devils don't necessasarily possess supernatural power but rather dance for entetainment. Fun Devils often dance for money as well as merriment. Masked Devils play an important roll in Secret Societies, helping to train young people to be good citizens.
Story told and recorded in 1971.
