Named for Fenn College's only athletic director, Homer "Woody" Woodling, who coached several different sports, Woodling Gym was the home court for CSU Vikings basketball teams before the Wolstein Center opened. During the Woodling Gym years, the Vikings upset Bobby Knight's 3rd seeded Indiana Hoosiers in the 1986 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship Tournament on their way to becoming the first-ever 14 seed to reach the Sweet Sixteen. Under Coach Gary Waters, the Vikings have recaptured the excitement of high-stakes basketball highlighted by another March Madness Tournament appearance in 2009, where they demolished 4th seeded Wake Forest in the first round. The CSU women's basketball team also appeared in the NCAA Championship Tournament in 2008 and 1010. Today Woodling Gym remains home to CSU volleyball, wrestling, and fencing.
