In 2008, a study reported that 28 million Americans are over shoppers due to many reasons besides credit cards. Compulsive buying disorder develops into many aftershocks and can either become dangerous or affects your relationships with family or friends. Our society considers drug addiction or alcoholism to be more serious, although people have committed suicide because over shopping has lead to overwhelming debt and has put tremendous pressure on their lifestyle in a way that becomes too difficult to cope with due to guilt and shame. For many years this disorder was ignored and only in the last decade have we seen psychiatric literature and studies addressing this problem, one with significant emotional, social, occupational and financial consequences. Dr. April Benson Ph.D. author of "To Buy or Not To Buy" discusses with Susan Hersh the underlying "authentic needs" that lead men and women into a compulsive buying disorder and what action they can take to help overcome this addiction.
