Aimee - the olena flower is a low growing flower so the hula should be danced with your kaholo as low to the ground as you can go (e kala mai ia'u, but your aunty is old and it's been a hard day at work). The hand motions are done up high so you can provide contrast in your movements. (Up down up down - not a rocking of the shoulders but rather dramatic level changes when possible.) When you perform this hula emulate the strong mana of this plant . Unlike the pikake or 'awapuhi it is not a plant that people prized for its scent or outward beauty. It is sought out for its healing abilities. It is hard to come by and it thrives in hot temperatures. Be strong, NOT delicate. Wear your hair up (ie. in a bun) and dress in yellow. Think about experiences that tested your own durability - when your opinion or reputation was tested and you would rather sleep but found the strength to face the world. The soft, graceful motions should be the kiss and the rain for even the strongest people are in need of a support and a kind word when they live their life holding true to their values.
