She went from being a 22-year-old working at a dry cleaner to a welder in the Liberty shipyards of South Portland. She quickly learned how to weld, but not how to get used to staging area heights, so she was moved down to the "flats" to weld metal before it was used in the ships. Besides making good money, she also was proud to have done something to support the war effort.
