Update: 3rd Oct 2009 (a sad day indeed)
Yes vote win on the Lisbon Treaty, nothing more we can do, it like the end of something just happened.I can only hope that those of us who were on the No side were wrong about it.I hope I will never have to say "I told you so" one day when the EU does something our Government promised wouldn't happen, they promised a Yes vote would create Jobs and end the recession, they better deliever on that promise else our freedom will have been lost for nothing

This is my opinion on the Lisbon Treaty and the upcoming SECOND referendum Ireland will have on it on 2nd October 2009

Ireland is STILL the only country having a vote on this, all 26 other countries of the EU are being denied the chance to vote.

In 2005 the French and Dutch people rejected the EU Constitution, the Lisbon Treaty is just the same thing under a new name, implemented in such a way that the governments of 26 of the 27 member countries are able to agree and ratify the treaty (aka the EU Constitution) without getting permission from their public, the people who they are meant to serve, including the French and the Dutch who even though they rejected the EU Constitution it is now being forced on them under a new name.

In June 2008 Ireland held it's 1st referendum on the Lisbon Treaty and 56% of teh voting public voted NO, voted AGGAINST the treaty.

Yet on 2nd October 2009 we will be made to vote AGAIN on the EXACT SAME THING we already voted on and REJECTED.

Where is the democracy in all this?

  • its stupid to think that a no vote would send a message to either europe (who have done so much for us) or the gov.

as for declan ganley he his a backing down on his word to stay away from politics

it is a different treatey to what we voted on last time it address what the irish rejected about it last time

plus anyone who thinks they will vote either yes or no because they dont know what to do read it up or dont vote please dont sway this thing on a whim of a descision think about it

  • I'm sorry but how is it a different treaty? There have been no changes made to it since last time, that would indicate it is still the exact same treaty in my view

  • NO SIDE: Shinners, Ganley, Socialists, Coir, Eirigi, UKIP, Le Pen, BNP.

YES SIDE: all international chambers of commerce, most independent economists, 3 main political parties, IFA, IBEC, SIPTU, ICTU, most major trade unions, Pfizer, Ryanair, Intel, Microsoft.

    Who you going to trust?

  • Ok dude you have posted the exact same comment numerous times now, I have deleted all but this one, either engage in some actual discussion or should you post the same comment again I will consider you a spammer and block.

and in regards your question i'd say if Ryanair are supporting something I doubt it can be anything that would improve workers rights, nor would I have much trust in the "3main parties" especially Fianna Fail right now

  • As far as I know those guarantees are reflections of sections that are legally binding within the treaty. I've only read the condensed versions of it and I'm not a lawyer so I don't know the ins and outs of the terms but I "think" thats the case.

Good video, nice to see an informed opinion either side. Far too much mud slinging and ridiculous slants on either side diluting whats actually important here.

  • hey Smurf, I think the best way to describe the "gaurantees" is the issue of Neutrality, within the treaty it calls for nations to increase millitary spending and to commit their troops to a common EU army if/when the EU calls for it. In the so called "gaurantees" the EU said our Neutrallity is still valid, however there is still nothing in the treaty that says any Neutral countries will be exempt or retain their status, as such the gaurantee is just an easily broken promise and legally binding

  • I agree, why vote for something twice. I hope your country gives enough no votes on this again.

  • The treaty is the same as before no changes just assurances that are not worth the paper they are written on and has anybody thought about the precendent it sets like in any vote in Irish politics p.s it should be put to all the people of the E.U but they know what would happen a big NO!!!

  • If people think the votes of the people count, they should think again and open their eyes.

  • Ohm and MokongX3M, congratulations on your video. You're an intelligent and articulate person. You should consider doing a law degree. Once you've studied EU law, you will begin to understand some of its finer points (unlike the trinity of doubting thomases, McDonald, McKenna and Synott).

  • If it any consoltation to the maker of this video, all of the guarantees will be incorporated into the next EU Accession Treaty and will form part of the corpus of EU law. There is no argument about this, That is what was agreed between all 27 Member States. With all due respect to Patricia McKenna, Cathy Sinnott and Mary Lou McDonald, none of them are European Union lawyers, and all seem incapable of understanding that the guarantees changed the context (as opposed to the substance) of Lisbon.

  • well spoken!

I am a Czech and after the unfortunate Irish YES our president Klaus is going to be exposed to a massive coercive campaign. Most of the Czechs stand behind him but how long? The government, the Parliament and the media are going to ostracize and isolate the president.

Free people of Europe, please support president Klaus!

  • yet another waisted vote. i feel very ashamed to be irish. i will probably never vote again here, it is always waisted.

  • Great point, they had the strongest voice the damm thing just passed

The EU is not democracy it's communism.

  • Europe is falling into the lets become one big happy world family joke. Why the hell do you guys need to do that? You want to be controlled by other countries and lose your rights and idenity -real madness.

  • By the looks of it so far, the result is going to be a yes this time around. My view is that the Irish made a fundamental mistake by even voting the second time around. Every person should have simply refused to vote and told them they've voted already. End of story. Brussels could not have got its way by repeatedly bashing its battering ram at the Irish until the desired result, that way. The recession has proved to be a god send for Brussels. Scared people lean toward security.
