1964 Top Ten single by one-hit wonder Joey Powers, who grew up in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania and was assisted early in his show business career by fellow Canonsburg resident Perry Como.
UPDATE DEC 12,2012
After being notified by many posters that this was not the original version, I contacted super YouTube poster "dowopper51" and he was gracious enough to post the original 45 single version. Thanks to all of you who informed me that my post was an alternate version of the song. And, of course, thanks to Richard (dowopper51).for being so accommodating in posting the original. To listen to it and zillions of other great posts, please visit his channel, you won't regret it!

I disagree,, I think this is the original. i have a very good ear for music and this is the original. The girls voices are perfect when thy sing over him at the end. i don' think that could be duplicated. I grew up with this song and I love it to death.

Finally got someone to post the original 45 version, see "dowopper51"'s channel. Like you, I also thought this was the original, but amazing how time dulls the memory.

Still a beautiful song after all these years. And I agree that it's not the original, but good enough.

This is not the version I have, and I don`t like it as much as the one on a 45rpm from AMY records with this song and "Where do you want the world delivered" on side B. I bought it in Washington DC, in 1963 or 1964. I think it`s much prettier. Joey does not sing the ending alone, for starters. And the whole song has more taste. Running time: 2:18. Soon I`ll see how to post it here, as a very needed replay, if anyone else doesn`t do it before me.

I'm a member of a DJ/Song site where we are all sticklers on which versions were the correct 45/Hit Single Versions. This is indeed an alternate take, which has become the version you probably hear on the radio nowadays. The original "Hit Single Version" has double tracked lead vocals, apparent as soon as you hear the first line.

My earlier post apparently didn't upload. There is a web site for producer/song writer Artie Wayne who has an interview with Joey Power's. Joey and Artie both say that it's Paul Simon playing 6 string acoustic and Roger (Jim) McGuinn playing 12 string acoustic. Google Artie Wayne to see the interview on his site.

I think this is the same as the single. I pulled out my copy of the single and Joey sings the last line alone on my single just like this version. There is an interview on (produce/song writer) Artie Wayne's web site with Joey Powers and Artie and they both say the 6 string acoustic was played by Paul Simon and the 12 string acoustic was Roger (Jim) McGuinn who a year later was in LA forming the Byrds.
