With 'Blue Monday' here and some resolutions already broken, the refurbished Leeds Met gyms couldn't be opening at a better time.
Following the traditional excess of the festive season and the grip of the current cold snap, weight gain this New Year is expected to be a little above average as people eat more to stay warm. However, as the days pass and the ice begins to melt the reality of wanting to shed some of those Christmas pounds becomes all too real.
Over the Christmas period the gyms at both Civic Quarter and Headingley Campus underwent substantial redevelopment. With walls knocked down, floors re-laid and all the machinery replaced to help increase capacity, the new-look gyms are set to be a huge hit with students and staff over the coming months.
The University has embarked on a partnership with world fitness brand Precor, to help refurbish the gyms with equipment as well as working together on sports scholarships and sports team support.
Dave Henderson, University Sport Operations Manager, said: "We intend to work very closely with Precor and its parent company Amer Sports to get the very best out of a prosperous long-term relationship. Leeds Met has a number of world class athletes based at its Headingley Campus whom I am sure will benefit from our investment in both world class exercise and conditioning equipment and a world class partnership.
As an extra incentive to join, Leeds Met colleagues can now pay their health and fitness sports pass membership on a monthly basis through Payroll. Membership costs are priced from as little as £10 a month single cover to £15.42 a month for family cover.
Leeds Met, which is part of the Healthy Universities Network, will host an opening ceremony on Tuesday 26 January with special guest Yorkshire's heptathlon world champion, Jessica Ennis, expected to make an appearance. The gyms will be opening its doors to students and staff during the week commencing the 18 January, ahead of the launch event.
To join please complete the Sports Pass application available at both the Headingley Campus and Civic Quarter Sport receptions (applications will only be valid on production of your Carnegie card).
For any further information please enquire at Sports reception or for computer images of what the new gyms will look like take a look at the New Gym Flyer.
@hassler100 Think he was saying "If I can welcome..." but the accent and the way he said it made it sound like something else!
