@fiddlinandy It is a combination of African and Scots/Irish/English musical traditions. Scots/Irish/English to a greater extent, African to a lesser extent. Mainly instrumentally speaking from instruments brought to the country by slaves. Though the africans were not allowed to retain their actual musical traditions, so they played "white" music on their instruments. In fact, most fiddlers and other musicians that played at dances were slaves.
