This is the first part of a planned 16-bit computer that will run entirely in minecraft. That computer will be "Hack" compatible, which is to say that it'll run code meant for the Hack machine described in The Elements of Computing Systems (a fantastic book that you should look up if you are at all interested in how computers work. Its website is http://www.idc.ac.il/tecs ).

Some more info:

The design was drawn up in a program called Redstone Simulator (does what it says on the tin), which was written by Baezon on the Minecraft Forums http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtop...

MCEdit ( http://minecraftforums.net/viewtopic.... ) was used to help clear off space and import the design into minecraft. Hours of experimenting with prototypes, modifications to the design, and debugging took place in the game itself, however.

This project is far from over. Memory, here I come...

Not really. The time for an operation to be completed in this computer is extremely high, leading to the need of a very slow clock(something like 0.1hz, no joke). Just because this ALU has 16 bits doesn't mean it has more processing power.

Computers we use today will probably never be able to be made in minecraft because a bit, in this model, is about the red stone torch, it is either on or off, and guess how big a real bit is in real life? Well it's about a nanometer, which is about 2x smaller than your DNA and the size of a nano particle. So even if someone were to build to all, the world would not load enought chunks, since minecraft worlds aren't infinite, also the redsto e cannot carry over to unloaded chunks.
