On June 6th. 2010 (66th. anniversary of D-Day) i attended a concert at Sarnia, Ontario's Annual Artwalk festival. Matthew De Zoete who hails from Hamilton, Ontario was performing and he took a minute to pay tribute to Canadian and allied troops. He then performed his original song titled "Remembrance Day".
I found the song to be very moving. After the concert we spoke and upon learning that Matthew did not have a video available of this song, we decided to create one. I felt this was a song military personnel, their families and troop supporters would appreciate. On July 2nd. 2010 Matthew returned to Sarnia for another concert. He stopped in to the firehall where i was working in Bright's Grove and we recorded this great song using a Nikon D90 camera. The flag is hanging on the side of a firetruck. Mathew's introduction to this song tells you how heartfelt this song is to him.
The original version of this song can be found on his cd "Bottom Of The World". Please check out his website at www.matthewdezoete.com.
The lyrics are below.
Enjoy!

Hero To Hero Team Canada
REMEMBRANCE DAY
Standing beneath the cenotaph at Halifax
i heard the bugles on Remembrance Day
for the girls who went the distance from Victoria
and the boys who went marching from Saint John
Oh Canada
Do we know the price they paid?
Remembrance Day
Remembrance Day
Remembrance Day
if i shake the hand of every ancient soldier
if i wear a poppy and i bow my head
for the girls who were nurses from Regina
and the boys who bled their lives out for King George
Oh Canada
am i worth the price they paid?
Remembrance Day
Remembrance Day
Remembrance Day
Remembrance Day
i stood below the holy ground at Vimy
trying to walk in someone else's shoes
Oh would i go the distance that Good Friday
to bleed my sweet life out in the mud
so far from home?
Oh Canada
Do we know the price they paid?
Remembrance Day
Remembrance Day
Oh do i know the price you paid?
Remembrance Day
Oh do i know the price you paid?

Matthew is a brilliant artist, and I listen to his CD in my car all the time. This song brought tears to my eyes the first time I heard it, and even now, it still makes me a little sad, very proud, and eternally grateful every time I listen to it.

I think what you are doing is great. I have a great appreciation for our Canadian soldiers who risked and gave their lives for our freedom. Many people don't understand what it would be like stare the virtual certainty of death in the face. Vimy Ridge is a great success story of our nation that more people should know about. It was both tactical and genius. Songs like this awaken a sense of pride in us. Good job and keep it up brother. Your song is meaningful, respect to you. Oh Canada!
