Gryffin, a juvenile Great Horned Owl, came in as an emaciated 'failed hunter'. Sometimes the parents stop feeding the young before they are actually ready to hunt for themselves. He was very weak so we had to cut his food into little bits and help him get it down his throat. At this point he was cooperating with the feedings, but still not able to take the food and swallow it himself. (Next video shows him able to take the food and do the rest himself.)

  • It's hard to tell for sure what happened...... It could be that he wandered 'off course' at a point when it seemed like he should be old enough..... But Mother Nature is harsh many times too.

Overall, I'd say that 80% of the animals that come to us were 'damaged' in some way by humans. So 20% by Mother Nature isn't as bad when you look at it that way. We try to help them all no matter what the original cause was. :-)

This owl is doing GREAT and is slated to be released soon.

  • And they call it "Mother" nature. This owl is pretty good proof that nature isn't the best of mothers either.
