A tutorial on how to solve the top cross.
The algorithm we must know for this step is:

F T R Ti Ri Fi. (i = the inverse move or counter-clockwise a quarter turn)

Official/Standard Notation:
F U R Ui Ri Fi

*IMPORTANT* If you DO NOT see one of the patterns above here, meaning you may only see two pieces together, or a small T instead of a full cross, YOU MUST do this. Take apart the top layer of the cube and completely solve the cube. This only happens if the cube was taken apart at one point or if pieces popped out and were not put back properly (IT DOES MATTER!!). Once you fix the cube, you will never have this problem again and you can then go on to solve it normally! Thank you.

*NOTE* There are obviously many different algorithms for solving the cube, especially the last layer of the Rubik's Cube. The algorithms I have chosen are the ones which produce results and patterns that I feel are easiest for a beginner to recognize and memorize. I also use the letter T for the "Top" or "Up" face, but please note that U is the "official" letter for the Upper face. This is really irrelevant as far as performing the algorithm, as long as you know when to turn the top face, you can call it whatever you like.

Looking on the top face, after the bottom two layers are completed, you should see one of FOUR different patterns. IMPORTANT**For this step, the YELLOW CORNER pieces do NOT matter. We are ONLY looking at YELLOW EDGE pieces and also the center yellow piece on top.

The four different patterns for the top yellow face are: One yellow center piece, a horizontal line, an L shape, or a cross.

**IMPORTANT** The cube must be held in certain ways in order to perform the algorithm, so please view the video diagram to make sure you are performing the move correctly. ONCE YOU HOLD THE PATTERN ON THE TOP FACE CORRECTLY, THE FACE THAT IS CLOSEST TO YOU (FACING YOU DIRECTLY) IS NOW THE FRONT FACE!

  • What he doesn't tell you is that if at the beginning of step 4- if you have only one yellow or three yellow topped pieces in the yellow cross position, it means your particular cube is unsolvable. This happens when u take your cube pieces apart and put it together wrong. Only fix is to put it back together solved and restart it. Wasted 2 days because of his little omission :)

  • @usta4070 Didn't mention it in the video, but included it in the video description a while back (Click the "Show More" button above) since others had mentioned problems such as yours. I never really took apart my cube or had pieces pop when I made this video so I hadn't come across those situations. But glad you were able to discover what the cause of the problem is and fixed it :-)

  • Be sure to look at exactly how he is holding the cube, for example, if the blues are on the bottom..etc. After screwing up my cube, and going back to the first step for the 2nd time, I made sure to do this, and it helped a ton. Follow exactly everything he does. Peace guys! :)

  • thumbs up if your watching this and already know how to solve one

  • What do I do cuz my yellow face is a diagonal line and when I do the algorithm all the other sides get mixed up

  • I got confused coz he kept changing how he's holding it @.@

  • Can somebody please tell me am i doing wrong?

I do what ever he does but still i am not getting the cross.

I saw Dan Brown's also but in vain...

    any help appriciated

  • if you have line (from left to right), you can go directly to making cross avoiding spending time on making the L. Formula from line to cross is F R T 'R 'T 'F. Just be sure the line is horizontally oriented (from left to right).

  • if you have a single centre-piece, does it matter which is your front face when you do the move?

  • is it possible to solve the yellow side at the end of this step?

  • anyone else getting dizzy

  • Too late smashed the cube on the floor.
