REST STROKE AND FREE STROKE
The two basic ways of striking the string are with rest stroke and free stroke.
Rest stroke is when you play the string and lean or rest onto the string behind it. Be sure to always alternate your fingers when performing rest strokes. When playing rest stroke keep the tip joint relaxed, not rigid or too loose but just a slight amount of give in the tip joint to be sure your fingers are relaxed. The best use for rest stroke is when your playing scales, single note melodies or whenever you wish to emphasize or bring out a particular melodic part or when accenting a note.
The free stroke is played by smoothly curving the right hand fingers, striking the string, and then freely gliding over the next adjacent string behind it. Be sure to alternate your fingers and allow them to bounce back into position after you have completed the stroke. Move the fingers toward the palm and start the stroke from the upper knuckle joint.
