Gabriel, celestial, descending from the clouds
Bears a gilded tablet inside a silver shroud
Reading from the missive, the words there did foretell
The faltering of heaven and the day the angels fell.

I heard a trumpet sounding, smelled sulphur in the sky
I felt the thunder pounding and I saw an eagle fly
There were half a hundred horses over flames a mile high
As the city on the river waged a battle for the sky.

The ground had started shaking and the sun was steeped in smoke
The air was thick with fire and it covered like a cloak
The trees were bending double, contorted in the wind
I called for you to come until I could not call again.

I saw little of the battle that was raging in the air
Lightning struck the river and the steam was rising there
A regiment of seraphim came falling from the sky
And I wondered whether they were those persuaded by the lie.

The last thing I remember I was falling to the floor
And someone close behind me cast two shadows on the door
The water's running backwards to the rivers from the sea
The mountains are all crumbling, oh love, deliver me.

The sky is smoke and cinders and I cannot find the moon
It's as dark outside your window as it is inside your room
Come wrap your arms around me, lie beside me till it's through
Armageddon's coming early and I won't go without you.

The last thing I remember I was falling to the floor
