Rather than put a judgment call on things by calling them "evil" I prefer to call it ignorance. People do effed up things because they ultimately don't know any better.
@OldeVampyr: Indeed. The last chapters of their holy book are an evil foisted off on them by cynical men who knew EXACTLY what the implications of that drug induced halleucination would be.
@RyuDarragh I think that is part of the reason Christians look forward to the end of days like they do. The rapture just can't come fast enough for them.
@OldeVampyr: It boils down to reductivism. You might as well as destroy the entirety of reality and spare all of us the pain of living in this universe that does not seem to really have any concern, or animosity, to life.
Trying to square up an all loving God to children dying, I told myself that God was sparing these children a lifetime of pain in this crappy world. But I couldn't square up an all loving God to the months and years of pure suffering that some older people go through before THEY die.
Oh and by the way, I totally believe the caller was mark, ya sure he disguised his voice with a southern accent but it definitely had the same reflection, and tone and I dont give a fuck what Russell says. His voice fits, him being from Austin fits. He even dropped the accent at one point.
It was the atheist experience. This has always been a very good and obvious argument against a heaven and hell, and a loving god, and a all knowing god. It also makes a argument against the tired old "what is the meaning of life" and I always point out, what was the point of a kids life when he died of cancer when he was 9? What was the point in his life according to your religious beliefs? Why even be fucking born?!
I read the whole thing. Very... enlightening to say the least. The number of humans born, and the deaths of children below maturity, is staggering.
The only things I missed in the paper were when the author assumed that the human race appeared and began counting births (as we evolved gradually I've always disliked saying "humans appeared" at this and that time), and which age the author considers to be the age of maturity for humans.
