People don't realize that back in the hay day of muscle cars ford wasn't even a competitor. GM made the best overall engines and dominated the racing scene with dodge companies not far behind.

Now if you replace the EFI on the 454ss then it holds up, but is much more expensive. The heads on the 454ss are pretty crappy too, where the GT40 heads on the L are among the best ever offered from the factory for the SBF. Then there is less weight to factor in too. The L generally weighs less than the 454, so the same power levels will move the truck better.
Like I said before, I love the concept of the 454SS, but the execution FROM THE FACTORY was less than spectacular.
