my dell mini with ubuntu crashed the second restart so I talked to dell and they told me to run the restore cd but I dont have a cd rom drive so my question is can I use any external cd rom drive or do I have to use the one dell sells?

I don't have compiz installed currently...
internal on the laptop is 1024x600
external you should be able to drive a larger screen. however the only standalone display i currently have runs at 1024x768
