  • what are rfd winds?

  • @grvolans Hey, RFD winds are known as "rear flank downdraft" winds. When you think of a typical storm it has updrafts and downdrafts. The Downdrafts are where the rain and hail fall while the updraft is where a wall cloud or rain free base is located.... often times during supercell thunderstorms, the rotation is so violent that the storm will actually draw the downdraft around the mesocyclone and spit it out around the circulation... Often with intense winds. Winds are much stronger a couple

  • @grvolans hundred feet up. As the downdraft wraps around the circulation the cascading effect of the rain and hail bring the strong winds to the surface. Here is evidence of that... we are south of the circulation looking north and got blasted from the west north west by the "RFD" winds. A lot of scientists believe the RFD is an essential part in tornadogenesis.
